Cursor vs Claude Code (2026): an AI editor or an AI agent?

Cursor and Claude Code compared head to head: how each works, where it runs, which models it uses, free plans, usage limits and prices in $ and ₹, and when it makes sense to use both.

Short answer

Cursor is an AI code editor you drive yourself, with a free Hobby plan and an India-only Start plan at ₹649 a month. Claude Code is an agent you brief from your terminal, IDE, desktop app or browser; it has no free plan and starts with Claude Pro at $20 a month. Pick Cursor to stay hands-on in an editor, Claude Code to hand off multi-step changes. Checked 2 October 2026.

Cursor and Claude Code both use AI to change your code, but they ask you to work in different ways. Cursor is an editor: you write code in it, and AI helps at every step, from completing the line you're typing to an agent that edits several files. Claude Code is an agent: you describe a task, and it reads your project, plans the change, edits files, runs commands and tests, and shows you what it did.

So the real question isn't which one is smarter. It's whether you want to steer every step or hand off a whole task and review the result.

Every price and limit below comes from the vendors' own pages, checked on 2 October 2026. They change often, so the date matters. This page contains no affiliate links.

How Cursor works

Cursor is a desktop code editor with AI built into everything. As you type, Tab suggests the next edit. Ask its agent for a change and it edits the files in your project, showing you each change to accept or reject. Cloud agents can work on a task while you do something else.

You pick the model for each request from a long list that includes Claude, GPT and Gemini models and Cursor's own Composer, or you let Auto choose. Rules you keep in .cursor/rules, or a plain AGENTS.md in your project, are added to the agent's context, so it follows your conventions.

Because you watch and approve every change, Cursor suits work where you want to stay in control: learning a codebase, small and medium features, and fixes in files you already know.

How Claude Code works

Claude Code starts from a task rather than a file. In your terminal you type something like "write tests for the auth module, run them and fix any failures", and it reads the relevant code, plans the change, edits as many files as it needs, runs the tests and tells you what it did. It can also stage changes, write commit messages and open pull requests.

The same agent runs in a terminal, inside VS Code or JetBrains, in the Claude desktop app, in the browser at claude.ai/code and in the Claude mobile app. A CLAUDE.md file in your project root gives it your standards at the start of every session, and it can read an existing AGENTS.md. It can also run in CI through GitHub Actions or GitLab, review pull requests, and run scheduled routines in the cloud.

This suits larger, multi-step changes you'd rather describe than type: refactors across many files, setting up tests, chasing a bug through the codebase. The trade-off is that you review a finished change instead of guiding each step, so reading the diff carefully matters more.

What it costs, in dollars and rupees

PlanPriceNotes
Cursor HobbyFreeLimited agent requests. No credit card.
Cursor Start (India only)₹649 a month, tax includedBilled in rupees by UPI or card. No on-demand usage, Bugbot, Auto or "other models" pool.
Cursor Pro$20 a monthExtended agent limits, frontier models, cloud agents.
Claude Pro (includes Claude Code)$20 a month, or $17 a month billed yearlyUsage limits are shared with the Claude chat app.
Claude Max (includes Claude Code)From $100 a month5× or 20× Pro's usage per five-hour session.

Two things are worth knowing before you pay:

  • Claude Code has no free way in. The free Claude plan doesn't include it. If you only want to try it, the cheapest route is a month of Pro, or pay-as-you-go through an Anthropic Console account. Our post on whether Claude Code is free covers this in detail.
  • Cursor's Start plan stops at its limit. It has no on-demand usage, so when the monthly allowance runs out you either wait for the next month or move up to Pro.

Which should you pick?

  • You're a student or just trying AI coding: Cursor's free Hobby plan. You can find out how you like working with an AI agent before paying anything.
  • You want to pay in rupees by UPI: Cursor's Start plan at ₹649 a month. Claude's plans are priced in dollars.
  • You want to review every change as it happens: Cursor. The accept-or-reject flow keeps you in the loop.
  • You're comfortable in a terminal and want to hand off bigger tasks: Claude Code.
  • You want AI in your CI pipeline or on a schedule: Claude Code, with GitHub Actions, GitLab CI or routines.
  • You want to choose between many models: Cursor. Claude Code runs Anthropic's Claude models.

Can you use both?

Yes, and many developers do: Cursor for everyday editing, Claude Code for larger tasks. Anthropic publishes a Claude Code extension that installs in Cursor as well as VS Code, so the agent can run in a panel inside the same editor.

If you do, keep your project instructions in one AGENTS.md. Cursor reads it, and Claude Code can read it too, so both tools follow the same conventions.

What neither one does for you

Both tools can write code that looks right and isn't. They don't know your business rules, and they can delete a failing test instead of fixing what it caught. Read every change before you ship it: our AI code review checklist is a good routine, and the production checklist for vibe-coded apps covers what to check before real users arrive.
